Spirit will begin regular flights to Palmerola on November 17 with flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Houston.
The arrival of Spirit in Palmerola is a major boost for the project, as so far the airline has not operated at the only current airport in the Honduran capital, Toncontín, but only in San Pedro Sula.
Toncontin is considered one of the most critical airports in the world, operational, for pilots because it is surrounded by mountains and has a very short runway, so its approach, in its surroundings and in the final section, is considered atypical or as it is known. in the aeronautical language "unstable profile", ie: approach or unstable profile.
Completion of work on the new Palmerola International Airport in the north of the country, between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, is scheduled for mid-October.
According to Peter Fleming, director of Emco-Munich, the company developing the project, work on the Parmerola is on schedule, as the seven boarding bridges are already installed and aesthetic work at the terminal is complete, such as flooring and carpeting.
The facilities are located six kilometers south of the city of Comayagua. In Palmerola, with a much longer runway than Toncontin, is the José Enrique Soto Cano Air Force Base of the Honduran Air Force (FAH), the historic base for the Northrop F5 Tiger aircraft, as well as the headquarters of the Joint Operational Force Bravo (JTF -Bravo). ) of the United States Army.
The new passenger terminal has a covered area of almost 40,000 square meters on three levels and has 13 boarding gates (seven with bridges and six for remote locations), 40 check-in desks, 17 self-check-ins, 34 of places of immigration. .control and 45 commercial spaces.
While the commercial platform has an area of 35,192 square meters, with the capacity to manage up to 13 aircraft at a time. Obviously, it will be a much smaller terminal than its neighbors El Salvador and Panama, which are considered important airports in Central America, but there is no doubt that Palmerola is the beginning of a growth in commercial aviation that Honduras already needs.
A key objective of the project is the development of the freight operation, for which there is also a 3,000 square meter freight terminal with modern cold chain technology.
The Palmerola Master Plan also envisages the development of an airport city with multiple complementary services.
Palmerola, with an investment of more than $ 130 million, is managed by the German-Honduran consortium Enco-Flughafen München, and operator of Toncontin, Germany's Munich Airport and, more recently, the next operator of the airport's cargo terminal. . International". San Oscar Romero "from El Salvador.
With Palmerola, Toncontin's international operation is expected to move to the new airport to open in October next year.
